I should confess that I don\u2019t like to make\nofficial statements. It evens cares me. Still here we all facing the fact still\nwe continue to dance despite anything, there\u2019s no chance to keep silence so\nvoila.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nimagine that the text is not gonna happen short still the scale of the topic\nand emotions can excuse it a bit. Anyway I\u2019ll try to run all my brevity skills.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below I\nput my point of view. If you see it other way \u2013 welcome to discuss in comments.\nAnd I\u2019m eager to know your opinion my dear colleagues as we all are touched\nwith this situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Short\nbrief for those who have no idea what this topic is about. It\u2019s about global\nname change of the style we dance: from \u00abTribal Fusion\u00bb into \u00abTransnational Fusion\u00bb\nand from \u00abAmerican Tribal Style\u00ae\u00bb into \u00abFatChanceBellyDance\u00ae Style\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sources are official statements of <a href=\"https:\/\/donnainthedance.com\/2020\/01\/10\/transnational-fusion-dance-an-open-letter-to-my-dance-community\/?fbclid=IwAR3eTN4_N98L9VMFZeYz-8fWBLBAkqz0zhhFo01gAkzzQbTzl0eeqsh4Y5I\">Donna Mejia<\/a>, who says it was she who began efforts to challenge the genre title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And of <a href=\"https:\/\/fcbd.com\/name-change-statement\/fireside-chats\/\">Mama C at FCBD\u00ae site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First shortly\n\u2013 I cannot agree with this decision because of following aspects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1.I consider\nit\u2019s very disadvantageous in a marketing sense. We\u2019ve just explained to audience\nwhat we dance \u2013 and here we got. Al efforts are multiplied by zero<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.I do\nnot share the cultural aspect which is put into the reason of renaming\n(although I can absolutely acknowledge that other people can have different\nfeelings)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.The banal\n\u201cnobody asked us\u201d although all the talks were about community and togetherness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4.The\nsplit as a consequences of name change<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you\nare one of those interested in weekend long reads \u2013 welcome to share my\ndeployed opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As to\nthe marketing I feel like there\u2019s no need to write much. A lot of colleagues\nsaid about this already and I can totally relate. Truly \u2013 it\u2019s just came that people\nstarted to recognize our style \u2013 and now it appears that we should start all\nover again. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cultural aspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First I\nwould like to quote the article of Donna Mejia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2026The\nword tribal signified membership to a people who endured brutal and perpetual\ngenocide, racism, and political, economic and ideological disenfranchisement. I\ncan\u2019t unsee these things. I will not trivialize the sacrifices my ancestors\nmade to survive and uplift me\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA\nweekend festival gathering of dancers who\u2019ve gained entrance to a community\nthrough paid instruction do not share the same cultural, demographic and\nphysical umbilical cord. Most certainly, no matter what adversities they have\ntraversed as individuals, they have not experienced the shock of collective\ngenocide and persecution for their way of life\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy\n2011, I could no longer complicitly co-sign the label Tribal Fusion. It was too\ndismissive of the harrowing experience of tribal peoples on all continents\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What I\nthink on this\u2026 I always try to remember that all people and all opinions are\ndifferent. I totally accept that for some people word \u201ctribal\u201d can be\nassociated with pain and humiliation that their nation went through. But word \u201ctribal\u201d\ndoes not mean \u201chumiliation\u201d!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To me term\n\u201ctribal\u201d always had a meaning of archetype of community. When before boarders\nand wars people were dancing at the fireplaces in their tribes celebrating\nfreedom and joy. I remember my delight because of the interview&nbsp; with Palika of \u201cHeavy Hips\u201d: \u201cIt\u2019s important\nto understand that we all belong to the one tribe of this Earth\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me\nTribal was always about this. In any term can be found both positive and\nnegative aspects. For instance term Transnational I see more in the negative\nmeaning of globalization, absorption and over-consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me constructive\nis concentration on a powerful and positive side. And idea of belonging to one\ntribe for me was about giving support to each other. And here I face that I did\nnot suffer enough to share the tribe with elected ones. My Ukrainian nation\nsurvived Holodomor genocide during soviet union times. So here I just can\u2019t\nunderstand why I was excluded of those better ones. History of any nation has\nthese episodes. So it seems to be the great reason to unite. But it appeared it\u2019s not. And it\u2019s a big pity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As to \u00abnobody\nasked us\u00bb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surely\nthere are style creators who made the name for it and they are free to choose\nany. At the same time their creation exists and grow due to devotees, who\nbelieve in idea, including the name of it, and who put their enthusiasm and\ntrust for the idea would grow. We all live with this dance. And here we face\nthat nobody asked us what we think, how we see this and what is important for\nus. We were just told. As to the new name for ATS\u00ae I can agree with Olga Meos. With all my\nlove, respect and admiration with Fat Chance and Carolena \u2013 for me the style is\nabout community not the person of creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And\nabout consequences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From\nthis point of view name change seems very strange to me. And now each of us is\nfacing the choice either to agree with the moment and change the titles of all\nthe videos \/ festivals \/ studios, or keep the old name for one\u2019s dance art. And\nhere the paradox comes. It seems like nothing changes still we all start to\ndance different styles. It\u2019s hard for me to say where it will take us all still\nit does not seem right. The perfect variant I see now is that creators would\nlisten to community opinion to take step back to the dance style names we all got\nused to. Partly it\u2019s my conservatism, but the point of my position stands at\nthe first place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If\nchanges will remain in force the split in tribal (transnational???) society seems to me inevitable. And I can\u2019t help feeling sorry for that.
